though i really think that using references as work of art but im guessing that its essential into becoming professional in whatever.. im not sure that i have much critique on this but ill try my best..

the drawing naturally matches the reference so ill give u props for that, only thing is that though i understand that ur trying ur best to excel in becoming a pencil art, it could be better if u added... well more like incorporate ur own style, as it wat helps distinguish ur work from others.. so instead of getting confused with whether u tried to match the original or if u just ripped/stole which i know u dun do.. because then i'd bashin ur ass at school >< lol not!

plus incorporating a style to ur drawings would normally get more people to view ur work more often as it gives a sense that u've mastered the fanart era and u have gone further to develop ur skills so u end up going beyond the original and end up incorpoarting ur own style.

but back unto the drawing, u managed to get goku's serious look and the hair seems to replicate the original well, however if ur trying to take on a heavy style, i suggest that u should intensify ur shadin, though increasing the contrast on Imageready would suffice but realizing that ur effort is only less than the expected standard that people expect from u.

definately brett, ur talented but this is wat that is holding u back, u need to get used to using no references as it creates independence for urself and pride in ur efforts, but keep it up, its still a good drawing, though i forgot to mention that this is SSJ 3 no? unless ur being lazy.. :XD: so keep drawing mate, u'll eventually get there..

Gojyo: Teacher, he’s running off on his own.
Hakkai: Oh dear…

Hakkai: You seriously have some nerve, coming back in one piece. Very brave of you.

Your work with reference is great, and I think it's only getting better. The expression is perfect, along with the tremendous amount of hair that goes with the 3 third ascention. Normally I would say the body looks to bulky, but it looks fine because of how the pose is set. I must say, I do agree with ~goldhedgehog in that I would like to see some independent art; maybe even just a created character to start? I notice these are still older drawings, this one by about 3 months, so I don't know exactly how or what you draw today. Either way, you still have mad skill my friend. :D

I just had a few thoughts about your comment, please take no offence to them.

I am no artist myself, I lack almost all ability to draw; but I do know that even drawing from referance is very hard. We don't know that it matches up with the reference, the pose could have been different. The only thing a reference means is that he did not draw it from just memory. I do agree that I would like to see some independent style though. No offence, I am a big Toriyama fan myself; I can tell you he did not rip this, the stealing you will have to believe in.

I agree that incorperating his own style will get him more views, but that's not what deviantART is about. It's about doing what you love, and having people tell you tips that they think will help you improve. I don't believe you can truly master any form of art, because there are so many little things you can do to improve; take =Rimfrost for example: She has been drawing in her style for years now, and if you look at her recent works, you'll see similarities, but even she is improving on a style that- as far as I know- she created.

I must ask about intensifying the shading; Don't you think the current shading is enough, and that any more would begin to take away from the mood of the drawing? I think if he had made it much darker, it would have made Goku look more evil; which is something you do not see in Goku's persona. I agree that artists are less when they must use a computer to help render the effect they want.

Must say that it is not SSJ 3, unless you are speaking Japanese. The SSJ stands for Super Saiyajin, which is a not a true translation on either front. If it were a true translation, the word Super would not be replaced, and Saiyajin would remain. If it is true English, the Super remains, and the Saiyajin is roughly translated to Sayain. ^^; Sorry, it really bugs me when someone who speaks English does that. Oh, and any form is considered Super Saiyan, they just tack on the 3 to show levels of ascention; plus, he says it's SS3 in the description. ;p
